TV archaeolgical dig at the Six Bells

What an exciting week we had at the Six Bells. Digging started on the Monday and as soon as the surface was taken off the two trenches, bits and pieces were found. Along with various pottery bits and a few coins, the most significant find was what they believe to be a Roman hotel. They measured and matched what was found in the original dig beneath the extension which took place in the mid seventies, with what they found this time around. On the day this was discovered there was huge excitement, with various archaeologists coming to have a look. They also found an entire Roman wall which had
fallen face down. Unfortunately there was not the time or the budget to lift it, but it has been preserved with a plastic membrane for, perhaps, a future dig.

The filming took place in and around the pub, interviewing a few locals including Norman Thomas who had his starring role. They also filmed at St Michael's Church, the Museum and the Abbey.

The programme was shown on the History Channel on Friday 25th November 2011 at 9pm on both SKY and Virgin.
