« Back|Our visible Past
A short walk along St Michael’s St. reveals the
village’s long history; the context within which
our community lives and breathes.
Entering, say from Bluehouse
Hill, we have behind us the
Roman Theatre and ahead
of us Verulanium
Museum,
at the Heart of the forum.
On our right, behind a fine
Victorian
School, Lies St
Michaels Church, a
Saxon foundation. Now we can
walk further along
St Michael’s St
through a scene of domestic and
public architecture of many ages.
This narrow street was once the
main coaching road from London
to the North West & Ireland. We
soon reach the river Ver with its
Roman ford,
Elizabethan watermill,
and 18th Century bridge.
To our right, before we cross the
bridge, stretches
Bell Meadow, the
ancient flood plain for the Ver,
forming part of Verulamium Park
gifted to the public over 79 years
ago, (beneath the park lies the Roman town).
Now, after crossing the bridge, we pass Kingsbury
Manor, a medieval foundation and on our right,
can enjoy a lovely view into
Fishpool St,
outstanding for its range of architecture. Next
we go left into Branch Road.
On our left, Art
Deco present itself and,
almost hidden, our oldest secular building,
Kingsbury's medieval Grange Barn. (no public access)
