This, now annual, charity event was founded in 1982 by a local businessman, Phil Gibson. In that first year, 1300 walkers, joggers and runners paid £1 each to enter the “mini-marathon”. In 2013, over thirty years on, the event was sold out for the first time with more than 6000 signing up across all events. As well as the half marathon wheelchair race, walk and run itself there is a 5k run and a children’s 1.5k fun run.
The half marathon route comes out and back through the top of St Michael’s village by the church.
There are ten local and national sponsors of the event. Local voluntary groups can offer to supply marshals in return for a donation to their particular group. Money is raised by the participants themselves for many other local and national charities.
